U.S. researchers examined the medical records of
nearly 9500 mother-child pairs. During pregnancy, the women were
screened for gestational diabetes. In addition, obesity in the
offspring was determined when the child was 5 to 7 years old.
Overall,
the risk for childhood obesity increased significantly as maternal
blood glucose level increased the association was particularly
striking for fasting blood glucose. However, after multivariate
adjustment, the obesity risk was not increased among children whose
mothers had met criteria for gestational diabetes an_d were lik_ely
treated.
The authors say their findings "suggest that
[gestational diabetes mellitus] treatment may decrease the risk of
childhood obesity an_d provide an additional reason for screening for
GDM in pregnancy."
